About this calculator

Running cadence is the number of steps you take per minute (spm), calculated from your running speed and average stride length: cadence = speed ÷ stride length, converted into steps per minute. It is one of the simplest numbers in running form, yet it strongly influences impact forces, overstriding and injury risk.

Coaches and running-form researchers often reference roughly 170 to 180 spm as a common range for efficient distance running — Jack Daniels’ well-known observation that elite marathoners tend to cluster near 180 spm popularized the idea, though the “right” cadence really depends on height, leg length and pace. Runners recovering from shin splints or knee pain are frequently coached to increase cadence by five to ten percent, which naturally shortens stride and reduces the braking force of each footstrike, without needing to consciously change anything else about their form.

Enter your running speed and typical stride length, and this calculator converts them straight into steps per minute, so you can compare your cadence against target ranges or track how it shifts as you train.
