About this calculator

Stroke rate, usually reported in strokes per minute (SPM), measures how quickly a swimmer cycles their arms, while stroke length (distance per stroke, or DPS) measures how far each stroke pushes them through the water. Multiplying the two roughly reconstructs swimming speed, which is why coaches track them together rather than in isolation.

A swimmer can hold the same pace two very different ways — a high stroke rate with short strokes, or a low stroke rate with long, powerful ones — and neither is automatically better; efficient swimmers usually aim for the longest stroke length they can sustain at a given rate. Swim coaches and triathletes use stroke-rate tracking (sometimes called Swim Golf when combined with stroke count) to diagnose fatigue and technique breakdown, and this calculator converts your stroke count, time, and pool length into stroke rate, seconds per stroke, and distance per stroke.
