About this calculator

This calculator derives your stride length from two numbers you can measure easily: your speed and your cadence (steps per minute). Since speed equals stride length times step rate, stride length = speed ÷ cadence, with unit conversions handled so you can enter speed in km/h or mph and cadence in steps per minute. It also reports the full stride (two steps, left-right-left) alongside the single step length, since coaches and gait-analysis tools use both measures.

Cadence and stride length are two independent levers that determine running or walking speed, so runners, run coaches, and physical therapists use this relationship to diagnose overstriding (a long, low-cadence stride linked to higher impact forces) or to plan cadence drills — commonly targeting around 170-180 steps per minute for distance runners — without needing a GPS watch that reports stride length directly.
