About this calculator

A shift differential is extra pay added to a worker’s base hourly rate for working undesirable hours — nights, evenings, weekends, or holidays — usually expressed as a percentage premium on top of the base rate, and in some union contracts and hospital/manufacturing settings it is a mandated part of the pay structure rather than optional.

This calculator applies the differential percentage to the base rate to find the extra per-hour amount, then multiplies the total (base plus differential) by hours worked to show the total pay for that shift.
