About this calculator
Signal-to-noise ratio in decibels is calculated as SNR(dB) = 10 × log₁₀(signal power ÷ noise power) — the standard logarithmic power-ratio formula used across electronics and communications, where every 10 dB represents a tenfold increase in the power ratio and every 3 dB roughly doubles it.
Audio engineers use SNR to rate how clean a microphone, preamp, or recording chain is, since a higher SNR means the noise floor sits further below the wanted signal, while RF and telecom engineers use it to characterize how reliably a wireless link or radio receiver can distinguish a transmitted signal from background noise, and electronics designers use it to spec amplifiers and sensor circuits.
