About this calculator

The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is calculated by dividing waist circumference by hip circumference, both measured at their widest points. The World Health Organization defines increased health risk at a WHR above 0.90 for men and above 0.85 for women, since it reflects "apple-shaped" central (abdominal) fat distribution rather than "pear-shaped" fat carried on the hips and thighs.

Doctors and epidemiologists favor WHR over BMI alone in some contexts because central fat around the abdomen and organs is more strongly linked to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes risk than overall body weight — two people with identical BMI can carry very different cardiometabolic risk depending on where their fat is distributed. Enter your waist and hip measurements to find your WHR and risk category.
