About this calculator

This calculator blends two established anthropometric ratios — waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), where a value above 0.5 flags increased cardiometabolic risk, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), a classic marker of central (android) fat distribution versus peripheral (gynoid) distribution — into a single composite score that summarizes central adiposity from one set of measurements.

Researchers and clinicians favor waist-based measures like these over BMI alone because BMI cannot distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass, nor where fat is distributed on the body; visceral, abdominal fat carries substantially higher cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk than fat stored on the hips or thighs at the same total body weight, a distinction that has motivated alternative composite indices such as A Body Shape Index (ABSI) in the epidemiological literature.

Enter your waist, hip and height measurements, and this calculator returns a combined adiposity composite score that reflects both the waist-to-height and waist-to-hip signals in a single number.
