Solar luminosity (L☉) is a standard astronomical unit for the total power radiated by a star, defined relative to the Sun’s own output so that stellar and galactic luminosities can be expressed as simple multiples rather than unwieldy raw wattages. The IAU’s adopted nominal value fixes the conversion at 1 L☉ = 3.828 × 10²⁶ watts, a standardized figure (distinct from any single measurement’s uncertainty) that astronomers use so luminosity comparisons stay consistent across papers and datasets.

Because stars span an enormous range of brightness — from red dwarfs radiating a small fraction of a solar luminosity to supergiants radiating hundreds of thousands of times the Sun’s output — astrophysicists routinely quote luminosity in L☉ in stellar catalogs, HR diagrams, and exoplanet habitability calculations, only converting to raw watts (SI units) when comparing against other physical quantities like a planet’s absorbed radiation.
