About this calculator

The steps-per-mile calculation estimates how many walking steps it takes to cover one mile, based on your stride length, which is commonly approximated as roughly 0.413 times your height (a formula popularized by pedometer and fitness-tracker manufacturers, including Omron and various CDC physical-activity materials). Taller people naturally have longer strides and therefore need fewer steps to cover the same distance.

This figure matters because step-counting devices — pedometers, phone accelerometers, and fitness trackers like Fitbit — often use a generic stride assumption (commonly geared toward a 5,000-steps-per-mile average) unless the device is manually calibrated to the individual, which can make step counts and derived distance/calorie estimates noticeably inaccurate for people who are much taller or shorter than average. Runners, walkers, and anyone chasing a daily step goal (like the popular 10,000-steps target) use a personalized steps-per-mile figure to convert between step counts and actual distance walked or run.

This calculator takes your height and returns your estimated stride length and steps per mile, so you can convert your device's step count into a more accurate mileage figure, or vice versa.
