About this calculator

In standard wood-frame construction, wall studs are placed at a fixed on-center spacing — typically 16 inches in most US residential framing, sometimes 24 inches for lighter loads — so that drywall sheets and sheathing panels land squarely on a stud edge for fastening. The basic count is the wall length divided by the spacing, plus one extra stud to close out the run, and framers add further studs at corners, wall intersections, and around window and door openings (king and jack studs).

Carpenters and framing contractors run this calculation to order the right amount of lumber before a job starts, and DIY builders use it when framing a new interior wall, since under-ordering means a mid-project lumber run and over-ordering wastes material and money. This calculator takes your wall length and stud spacing and returns the number of studs you need, including the extra end stud.
