About this calculator

This calculator estimates how many wall studs you need to frame a wall, based on the wall's length and the on-center (OC) spacing between studs — typically 16" or 24" in US residential framing. It divides the wall length by the spacing, adds one for the starting stud, and adds extras for corners, wall-end studs, and any door or window openings (king and jack studs).

Framers, DIY renovators, and contractors use this before ordering lumber for a stud wall, so they can also estimate the top and bottom plates (usually a double top plate and single bottom plate) needed to tie the studs together. Enter the wall length, spacing, and number of openings to get a materials estimate.
