About this calculator

The classic credit-hour study rule, widely cited by U.S. universities, recommends 2–3 hours of independent study per week for every one credit hour of class time — so a 15-credit course load implies roughly 30–45 hours of studying on top of class time each week. This calculator multiplies your credit hours by the study ratio you choose to estimate weekly study time, then extends it across the length of your term for a total study-hour budget.

The ratio isn't one-size-fits-all: STEM and writing-intensive courses often need the higher end of the range, while some students manage on less depending on prior background and course difficulty. College students, academic advisors, and tutoring centers use this kind of estimate to build realistic weekly schedules, catch an overloaded course plan before the semester starts, and set study-hour goals that match a program's expected workload.
