About this calculator
A subscription box business collects a recurring price per box but carries three main costs against it: the wholesale or curated product cost inside the box, the outbound shipping cost, and the packaging — mailer boxes, tissue, inserts, and branding materials. Subtracting all three from the box price leaves the profit per box, and dividing that profit by the box price gives the margin percentage, the figure investors and operators watch to judge whether the unit economics actually work.
Because subscription boxes depend on recurring revenue, even a thin per-box margin can be viable if customer retention is strong enough to spread acquisition costs over many billing cycles — but a negative or razor-thin margin means every new subscriber is a loss waiting to happen regardless of how long they stay. This calculator takes your box price and your product, shipping, and packaging costs to show the profit and margin per box, the baseline number behind any subscription commerce forecast.
