Markup Calculator
Find the selling price after adding a markup to your cost.

How it is calculated
Markup is the percentage added on top of your cost. The tool computes selling price = cost × (1 + markup/100) and profit = selling price − cost. Enter cost per unit and markup as a percentage. A markup of 100% doubles the cost. Markup is not margin: margin is profit as a share of the selling price, so it is always smaller than the markup for the same product (margin = markup / (100 + markup)). The tool does not add tax, discounts or other fees, and does not reject negative markups, which would simply sell below cost. Amounts display in dollars.
Worked example
An item costs 40 and you add a 60% markup. Selling price = 40 × (1 + 0.60) = 40 × 1.6 = $64.00. Profit = 64 − 40 = $24.00. The margin on that sale is 24 / 64 = 37.5%, not 60%, which is why markup and margin should not be mixed up.
Common mistakes
- Treating markup as margin and expecting 60% of the selling price to be profit.
- Entering the markup as a decimal (0.6) instead of a percentage (60).
- Starting from the selling price in the cost field, which compounds the markup.
- Forgetting that sales tax, shipping and card fees are separate and come out of your profit.
- Applying the same markup to every product without checking it against the margin you need.
About this calculator
This calculator applies a markup percentage to a product's cost to find the selling price and resulting profit — markup being the percentage added on top of cost (not to be confused with margin, which is profit as a percentage of the selling price; the two give different numbers for the same deal).
Retailers, wholesalers and small business owners use it to price inventory consistently — applying a standard 50% or 100% markup across a product line, for instance — and to quickly check that a chosen selling price actually delivers the profit margin the business needs to stay viable after costs.
