About this calculator

This calculator computes the selling price needed to hit a target profit margin as price = cost ÷ (1 − margin%) — not the same as simply marking cost up by the margin percentage, which is a common pricing mistake. A 40% margin target on a $60 cost, for example, requires a price of $100 ($60 ÷ 0.6), not $84 ($60 × 1.40), because margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup is profit as a percentage of cost.

Retailers, e-commerce sellers and service businesses use this to set prices that actually deliver the margin they're targeting on their income statement, and the calculator also reports the resulting profit per unit so you can see the dollar amount behind the percentage before publishing a price list.
