About this calculator

Markup percentage measures how much a selling price is increased above cost, calculated as (Selling Price − Cost) / Cost × 100. It's easy to confuse with profit margin, which divides the same numerator by the selling price instead of the cost — a product marked up 100% (doubled from cost) has a 50% margin, not a 100% margin, which is a common source of pricing mistakes.

Retailers, wholesalers, and small business owners use markup percentage to set prices that ensure a target level of profitability above their cost of goods, and different industries have well-known typical markup ranges — grocery items often carry thin markups of 10–15%, while jewelry or restaurant menu items can carry markups well over 100%. Enter the cost and selling price to find the markup percentage.
