Sum Calculator
Find the total of any list of numbers.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool reads a list of numbers separated by commas, semicolons, spaces or line breaks, ignores anything that is not a valid number, adds the valid ones and counts them: sum = x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ. Decimals use a dot as the decimal separator (12.5, not 12,5), and negative numbers are allowed. Because a comma separates items, a figure written with a decimal comma or thousands comma is split into two numbers. Empty input or a list with no valid number gives no result. The sum is shown with two decimals and the count as a whole number; the average is the sum divided by the count.
Worked example
List: 12.5, 7.25, 30, 4.75. Four valid numbers are found, so the count is 4. Running total: 12.5 + 7.25 = 19.75; 19.75 + 30 = 49.75; 49.75 + 4.75 = 54.5. The tool shows the total as 54.50. Dividing by the count would give an average of 13.625.
Common mistakes
- Typing a decimal comma (3,5) and getting 3 and 5 as two separate numbers.
- Writing thousands with a comma (1,200), which is read as 1 and 200.
- Including currency symbols or units like "$5" or "3kg". Items that are not pure numbers are silently skipped, so check that the count matches your list.
- Expecting an error for a typo. A mistyped item is dropped, and the sum is built from fewer numbers.
About this calculator
This tool adds every number in a list and returns the running total, along with a count of how many values were entered and their average. It accepts numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines, so you can paste a column straight out of a spreadsheet or receipt without reformatting it first.
Bookkeepers reconciling a stack of invoices, students checking a homework total, and anyone splitting a bill or tallying a shopping list use it to skip manual addition and the risk of a dropped digit. Negative numbers and decimals are handled the same way as whole numbers, so it works equally well for a list of expenses or a set of temperature readings.
