About this calculator

A take rate measures how much of the total money flowing through a marketplace or platform the platform itself keeps as revenue, expressed as a percentage of gross merchandise value (GMV) — the total dollar value of transactions processed. It is calculated as platform revenue divided by GMV, and it is the single most-watched metric for judging how a marketplace business (Uber, Airbnb, Etsy, DoorDash, App Store, ad exchanges) actually monetizes the activity it facilitates.

A low take rate can mean a platform is subsidizing growth or facing heavy competition, while a rising take rate often signals pricing power, added services (ads, fulfillment, financing), or margin pressure passed on to sellers. Investors and operators use take rate to compare monetization efficiency across marketplaces and to model revenue as GMV scales. This calculator divides your platform revenue by GMV to give you the take rate as a clean percentage.
