About this calculator

Tire manufacturers publish a maximum load rating paired with a maximum inflation pressure on every sidewall, and load capacity scales roughly with pressure between those limits — carry less than the max load, and you can safely run somewhat less than the max pressure. This calculator estimates the psi needed for your actual per-tire load by scaling from the tire's rated load-at-max-pressure point, then adds a safety margin.

Getting this right matters for towing, RVs, and commercial trucking, where the load per tire changes with cargo and passengers: underinflation for the load causes excess heat buildup and sidewall flexing that can lead to blowouts, while overinflation reduces the contact patch and ride comfort. Fleet managers and tire technicians use load-inflation tables from organizations like the Tire and Rim Association for the same purpose.
