About this calculator

Volume load is the standard way strength athletes quantify how much work a training session actually involved: for each exercise it’s calculated as sets × reps × weight lifted, then summed across all exercises in the session. A lifter doing 4 sets of 8 reps at 80kg on squats has moved 2,560 kg of volume load on that lift alone, a number that’s far more informative than just “I squatted 80kg today.”

Powerlifting and bodybuilding coaches track volume load week over week to manage progressive overload — the gradual increase in training stress needed to keep driving adaptation — and to spot when a lifter’s volume has climbed too fast relative to their recovery capacity, a common cause of overtraining and injury. It’s also central to periodization models, where planned changes in weekly volume load (higher in accumulation phases, lower during tapering before a competition) are mapped out in advance.

Enter your sets, reps and weight for an exercise, and this calculator returns the total volume load and total reps for that session, plus an easy way to compare it against previous workouts.
