About this calculator

A triathlon’s finish time is more than swim + bike + run — it also includes two transitions: T1 (swim-to-bike, changing out of wetsuit and into cycling gear) and T2 (bike-to-run, racking the bike and switching shoes). Total time = swim + T1 + bike + T2 + run, and while transitions look minor on paper, they’re a fully timed part of every triathlon result.

Age-group triathletes often lose more time in transitions than they realize — a fumbled wetsuit or slow shoe change can easily cost two to three minutes — while elite competitors drill transitions relentlessly and can complete T1 or T2 in well under a minute. Coaches use transition-time tracking to identify easy, low-risk time gains compared to the much harder work of getting faster in the swim, bike or run legs themselves, which is why “transition is the fourth discipline” is a common refrain in triathlon coaching.

Enter your estimated swim, bike, run and transition times, and this calculator totals them into your projected triathlon finish time.
