About this calculator

Typing speed is conventionally measured in words per minute (WPM), where a “word” is standardized as 5 characters (including spaces) for consistent comparison across languages and typing styles. Estimating the time to type a passage is simply time = word count ÷ WPM, though real-world typing time also depends on error rate and correction time, which this calculator doesn't attempt to model since it focuses on raw mechanical typing speed.

Average typists sit around 40 WPM, proficient typists around 60–70 WPM, and competitive typists can exceed 120 WPM, so the same 500-word article might take 12 minutes for one typist and just over 4 minutes for another — a gap that matters for planning purposes.

Data entry workers estimating task duration, transcriptionists quoting turnaround time, students planning how long an essay or exam response will take to type, and typing-test takers curious about real-world pacing use this calculator by entering their typing speed and either a word count or a pasted block of text to get an estimated completion time.
