About this calculator

Typing speed is conventionally measured in words per minute, where a “word” is standardized as 5 characters (including spaces) to keep the metric consistent across texts. Gross WPM = (total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed, while net WPM subtracts a penalty for mistakes: net WPM = gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes). Accuracy is separately reported as (correct characters ÷ total characters) × 100.

This calculator takes the characters typed, the time taken, and the number of errors, and returns gross WPM, net WPM, and accuracy.
