About this calculator
Cost per bottle is the simplest and most consequential number in small-scale winemaking economics: total production cost divided by the number of bottles produced, where total cost bundles everything from growing the grapes (vineyard labor, spraying, irrigation) through crush, fermentation, barrel or tank aging, additives, bottling supplies (glass, corks, labels, capsules), and a share of winery labor and overhead for the vintage. Getting this number right is the foundation for setting a wholesale or tasting-room price that actually recovers costs rather than just approximating one.
Vineyard owners, winemakers, and winery controllers run this calculation at multiple points in a vintage — early as a budgeting estimate based on expected yield, and again after bottling once actual costs and bottle counts are known — to check margins per varietal or per lot, decide pricing tiers, and compare the economics of different production scales or grape sources. A small change in yield per acre or in the number of bottles a barrel produces moves the cost per bottle more than most people expect, which is why this ratio is tracked closely rather than assumed.
