About this calculator
The Bruce protocol is a standardized treadmill exercise test used in cardiology and exercise physiology, in which speed and incline increase together every three minutes through a series of fixed stages until the subject reaches volitional exhaustion or a clinical endpoint is reached. Rather than requiring direct gas-exchange measurement of oxygen consumption, the total time the subject sustains the test can be plugged into sex-specific regression equations (commonly credited to Foster and colleagues) that estimate VO2max — maximal oxygen uptake, expressed in mL/kg/min — from treadmill time alone.
VO2max is widely regarded as the best single indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness, since it reflects the combined capacity of the heart, lungs, and muscles to take up and use oxygen during maximal exertion. Because the Bruce protocol is standardized and widely available, exercise physiologists, cardiac rehabilitation programs, and sports scientists use time-based regression estimates like this one as a practical substitute for direct metabolic cart testing when screening fitness or tracking training progress; this calculator applies the sex-specific regression to a given treadmill time. It is for general fitness estimation only and is not medical advice or a substitute for a supervised clinical stress test.
