About this calculator

VO2max — the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during intense exercise, measured in mL/kg/min — is the gold-standard measure of aerobic fitness, since it caps how much oxygen your muscles can actually use no matter how hard you push. Elite endurance athletes often reach 70-85 mL/kg/min, while sedentary adults typically sit in the 25-40 range.

Because a “good” VO2max depends heavily on age and sex — fitness naturally declines with age, and average values differ by sex — this calculator compares your VO2max against a normal distribution model for people of the same age and sex to estimate your percentile ranking and fitness category. It's used by runners, cyclists, and anyone tracking fitness from a smartwatch or lab test to understand what their number actually means relative to peers rather than in isolation.
