About this calculator

Waist circumference is used as a simple proxy for visceral (abdominal) fat, which is more strongly linked to metabolic risk than overall body weight or BMI alone. The commonly cited sex-specific action thresholds — often attributed to WHO and national health guidelines — flag increased risk at ≥94 cm and substantially increased risk at ≥102 cm for men, and ≥80 cm and ≥88 cm respectively for women.

These thresholds are associated with a higher likelihood of conditions linked to metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, independent of a person's overall weight category.

This calculator simply compares your entered waist measurement against the sex-specific thresholds to report which risk band it falls in; it is a general screening indicator, not a diagnosis, and does not replace an evaluation from a healthcare provider.
