About this calculator
The walk-run method (popularized by Olympic runner Jeff Galloway) alternates fixed segments of running and walking within a single session — for example, run 4 minutes, walk 1 minute, repeated for the full workout — instead of running continuously. Structuring the effort this way lets the body clear metabolic fatigue during the walk segments before it builds up, which research and coaching experience both show can extend total endurance, reduce injury risk from repetitive impact, and make long distances achievable for beginners who couldn't otherwise run continuously that far.
Run coaches prescribe walk-run intervals for couch-to-5K style beginner programs, for marathon and ultramarathon runners using it deliberately as a pacing strategy over very long distances (many ultrarunners walk-run every race regardless of fitness level), and for returning runners rebuilding a base after injury or a long break, where the walk segments manage load while still building consistent time on feet.
This calculator takes your target run and walk segment lengths and total session time to work out exactly how many cycles you'll complete and your total run time versus walk time, so you can plan a session that matches your training goal.
