About this calculator

A weighted GPA gives extra credit for taking harder courses by boosting the grade points earned in classes above the standard curriculum — commonly adding 0.5 points for honors courses and a full 1.0 point for AP (Advanced Placement) or IB courses, on top of the normal 4.0 scale where an A = 4, B = 3, and so on. A student earning a B in an AP class, for example, would receive 4.0 weighted grade points instead of the unweighted 3.0, reflecting the added rigor of the course.

US high schools use weighted GPA to encourage students to challenge themselves academically without being penalized on their transcript relative to peers who take easier classes, and many colleges specifically look at weighted GPA (alongside the unweighted figure) during admissions to gauge course rigor. Guidance counselors and students track it throughout high school to plan course loads, aim for scholarship thresholds, and predict class rank.

This calculator takes your course grades along with whether each was a regular, honors or AP-level class, and returns your weighted GPA.
