About this calculator

A z-score tells you how many standard deviations a value sits from the mean of a normal distribution, and converting that z-score into a probability requires the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the standard normal curve — the area under the bell curve to the left of that z-score, mathematically expressed using the error function (erf), since the normal density has no elementary antiderivative. This calculator returns both that cumulative probability and the complementary right-tail area beyond it.

This conversion sits at the core of inferential statistics: researchers convert a test statistic into a z-score and then into a p-value to decide whether a result is statistically significant, quality-control engineers use it in six-sigma process capability analysis to estimate defect rates, and standardized-test scorers use it to convert raw scores into percentile rankings against a norm group. Anywhere a normal distribution is assumed, the z-to-probability conversion is the bridge between a raw measurement and a meaningful likelihood.
