About this calculator

Asphalt is ordered by weight, not by area, because paving contractors buy hot-mix asphalt by the ton from the plant. This calculator gets you there in three steps: it multiplies your area's length by width to get square footage, multiplies that by the compacted thickness to get a volume, and then multiplies the volume by the mix's density to convert it into tonnage — since asphalt is typically priced and delivered by weight, not volume.

Compacted hot-mix asphalt density typically runs around 140–150 pounds per cubic foot (roughly 2.2–2.4 metric tons per cubic meter), varying with the specific aggregate and binder mix used, which is why this calculator lets you enter your own density figure rather than assuming a single fixed value — your supplier or spec sheet will usually have the exact number for the mix you are using.

Driveway installers, parking lot contractors and road construction estimators use a calculation like this to order the right tonnage before a pour, avoiding the costly mistakes of running short mid-job or paying for asphalt that never gets used.
