About this calculator

Stocking rate measures how much pasture land is allocated per animal, expressed in animal units (AU) per acre — an animal unit is standardized to roughly one 1,000-pound cow (with or without a calf), so different classes of livestock are converted to a common unit before comparing land needs. This calculator works in both directions: animal units per acre for a given herd and pasture size, and acres needed per animal unit, the inverse figure ranchers use when planning how much land a herd of a given size requires.

Ranchers, pasture managers and agricultural extension agents use stocking rate calculations to avoid overgrazing, which degrades forage quality and soil health over time, and to plan rotational grazing schedules that match herd size to what a given pasture can sustainably support through a season. Because forage productivity varies by region, rainfall and pasture type, stocking rate figures are typically cross-checked against local extension-service recommendations rather than used as a universal constant.
