Cost per acre is one of the most basic and widely used metrics in farm economics: total input cost — seed, fertilizer, chemicals, fuel, labor, or any combination of them — divided by the number of acres those inputs were applied to, giving a per-unit-area cost that's comparable across fields, seasons, and even different farms.

Because farm inputs and yields are naturally denominated in acres, expressing cost this way lets a grower compare the profitability of different fields or crops on equal footing, budget for the coming season, and benchmark against regional cost averages. Farmers, farm managers, and agricultural lenders use cost-per-acre figures routinely when planning crop budgets, evaluating land rental rates, and assessing loan applications.
