Viscosity measures a fluid's resistance to flow, and the centipoise (cP) is the traditional CGS unit for it, while the pascal-second (Pa·s) is the SI unit; the relationship is exact and simple: 1 cP = 0.001 Pa·s = 1 mPa·s (and 1 cP = 0.01 poise). Water at 20°C sits right around 1 cP, which is why the unit is so intuitive as a reference point.

Chemical and process engineers, formulators of paints, coatings, and food products, and lubricant specialists convert between the two constantly, since older datasheets and viscometers often report centipoise while modern SI-based process calculations need pascal-seconds.
