About this calculator

A cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) raises a salary or benefit by the rate of inflation so its real purchasing power stays flat: adjusted salary = current salary × (1 + inflation rate). The calculator also reports the raise amount in currency, since HR teams and employees usually think in dollars rather than percentages.

The U.S. Social Security Administration announces an annual COLA every October tied to the CPI-W, and many union contracts, pensions, and government salary scales use the identical formula. Employers use it during annual reviews to separate a true merit raise from the portion that simply keeps pace with rising prices.
