About this calculator

The midrange of a dataset is the simplest possible measure of central tendency: it is just the average of the minimum and maximum values, (min + max) / 2, ignoring every other data point entirely. Because it uses only two values, it is extremely fast to compute but also extremely sensitive to outliers, unlike the mean or median which factor in the whole distribution.

Statistics courses introduce the midrange alongside mean, median, and mode specifically to illustrate this tradeoff between simplicity and robustness, and it retains practical use in quality-control contexts, like quickly summarizing the spread of a small batch of measurements on a range chart, where a fast, easily hand-calculated center estimate is more valuable than statistical precision.

Enter a dataset’s minimum and maximum values, and this calculator returns the midrange along with the range (max minus min) between them.
