About this calculator
The range is the simplest measure of spread in a data set: subtract the minimum value from the maximum value, and the result tells you the full width the data spans. It's easy to compute and easy to interpret, but unlike the standard deviation or interquartile range, it depends entirely on the two most extreme values, making it highly sensitive to outliers and not very informative about how the bulk of the data is actually distributed between those extremes.
This calculator takes your list of numbers and returns the range along with the minimum, maximum, and count of values. Students learning introductory statistics, quality control staff doing a quick spread check on a batch of measurements, and analysts scanning a data set for early signs of outliers use it as a fast first look at variability before reaching for more detailed statistical measures.
