About this calculator

The midrange, (maximum + minimum) / 2, is the simplest possible measure of a data set's center — the value exactly halfway between its extremes — while the range, maximum minus minimum, measures how spread out the data is. Unlike the mean or median, the midrange ignores every value except the two most extreme ones, which makes it fast to compute but highly sensitive to outliers.

Quality control inspectors and manufacturing engineers use the midrange for quick spot-checks on production runs when only extreme readings are logged, and meteorologists commonly report a daily temperature midrange from the recorded high and low. Statistics students encounter it as an introductory example of a measure of central tendency, useful for illustrating why more robust statistics like the median are usually preferred for skewed or outlier-heavy data.
