About this calculator

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) — the fat packed around internal organs rather than under the skin — is a stronger predictor of metabolic risk than total body fat or BMI, but it normally requires a CT or DEXA scan to measure directly. Anthropometric prediction equations get around this by using waist circumference and sex (and sometimes age or BMI) in a regression formula validated against imaging-based VAT measurements, giving an estimated VAT area (cm²) that converts to an estimated mass.

This calculator takes waist circumference and sex and returns an estimated VAT area and mass. Clinical researchers and dietitians use this type of estimate as a low-cost screening step to flag patients who may benefit from imaging or closer monitoring for metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular risk, without needing scan time for every patient.
