About this calculator

Under the World Handicap System, a golf score differential is calculated as (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating. The 113 is the slope rating assigned to a course of "standard" difficulty, so multiplying by it normalizes every round to that common baseline regardless of which course, tee, or slope it was played from.

Golfers calculate a differential for every eligible round they post, and a player's official Handicap Index is derived from the average of their best 8 differentials out of their most recent 20 rounds — which is why understanding this single formula matters for anyone tracking their handicap by hand or double-checking what their club or golf app has calculated.
