About this calculator
MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration) measures how concentrated hemoglobin is inside the average red blood cell, calculated as (hemoglobin ÷ hematocrit) × 100, expressed in grams per deciliter (g/dL). Along with MCV and MCH, it is one of the three core red-cell indices reported automatically on every complete blood count (CBC).
MCHC is what clinicians use specifically to classify anemia by the color, or “chromia”, of red cells under a microscope: a low MCHC (hypochromic) points toward iron-deficiency anemia or thalassemia, where hemoglobin production itself is impaired, while a normal MCHC (normochromic) with a low red cell count instead suggests causes like blood loss or chronic disease anemia. A markedly elevated MCHC is comparatively rare and often flags hereditary spherocytosis or a lab artifact from a poorly prepared blood sample, which is why an unusually high result typically prompts a repeat test before diagnosis.
Enter your hemoglobin and hematocrit values, and this calculator returns your MCHC in g/dL.
