About this calculator
Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is a standard red-blood-cell index reported on every complete blood count, calculated as hematocrit percentage multiplied by ten and divided by the red blood cell count in millions per microliter. The result, expressed in femtoliters, falls into a normal reference range of roughly 80 to 100 fL in most laboratories, with values below that range called microcytic and values above it called macrocytic.
Clinicians and hematology labs use MCV as the first branch point when classifying anemia: a low MCV points toward causes like iron deficiency or thalassemia trait, a normal MCV with low hemoglobin suggests anemia of chronic disease or acute blood loss, and a high MCV points toward vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, or certain bone marrow disorders. It is one of several indices, alongside MCH and MCHC, doctors read together rather than in isolation.
This calculator reproduces the standard MCV formula from hematocrit and red cell count so you can see how the index is derived; it is provided for educational purposes and does not replace a laboratory report or a clinician’s interpretation.
