About this calculator

The NATO phonetic alphabet (officially the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet) assigns a distinct, unambiguous word to each letter — Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta — so that letters sounding similar over a noisy radio or phone line, like B, D, and P, can't be confused. It was standardized by ICAO and NATO in the 1950s and is still the global standard in aviation, maritime, and military radio communication.

This tool looks it up in both directions: enter a letter to get its phonetic word, or enter a word (“Bravo”) to find the letter it stands for.

Pilots, air traffic controllers, ham radio operators, and call-center or IT staff spelling out confirmation codes, license plates, or serial numbers over the phone all rely on this same alphabet to avoid mishearing errors.
