About this calculator

This tool converts any text into the NATO phonetic alphabet, replacing each letter with its standardized code word — A becomes Alfa, B becomes Bravo, C becomes Charlie, and so on through the full 26-letter set — so the text can be spelled out unambiguously over a voice channel. The alphabet was designed so its words remain distinguishable from each other even under poor audio quality, heavy accents or radio static.

It is the standard used by pilots, air traffic controllers, military and emergency services personnel, and maritime radio operators whenever a call sign, code or identifier must be transmitted with zero room for mishearing. Outside those professional contexts, people use it when reading out a serial number, confirmation code, license plate or spelling an uncommon name over the phone, since letters like "B", "D" and "P" or "M" and "N" are easily confused by ear but their phonetic words are not.
