A pizza’s usable area is a circle, so area = π × r² (where r is half the diameter) — and because radius is squared, area grows much faster than diameter does. Doubling a pizza’s diameter roughly quadruples its area, which is why a single large pizza usually delivers far more actual pizza per dollar than two mediums, even though intuition based on the diameter alone suggests otherwise. Dividing the price by the area gives a clean price-per-square-inch figure that lets you compare any two pizzas directly.
