About this calculator

In a print-on-demand (POD) business, a supplier like Printful, Printify, or Gooten produces and ships each item only after it sells, charging the seller a base production cost per unit. The seller sets a retail price on their own store or on a marketplace, and the platform hosting the sale — Etsy, Shopify, or similar — typically takes its own platform or transaction fee out of that sale.

Profit per item is what is left after both of those costs are subtracted from the retail price, and margin expresses that profit as a percentage of the retail price. Because POD sellers carry no inventory and pay per-unit costs only when an order comes in, this margin calculation is the main lever they have for pricing decisions — small changes in base cost or platform fees can swing profitability much more than in a traditional inventory-based retail model.
