Selling on a marketplace means working backward from your costs to a list price that survives every fee taken out along the way: item cost, shipping, the marketplace’s referral or category fee (commonly around 8–15% on platforms like Amazon or Etsy), payment processing fees, and finally your own target profit margin. The formula rearranges into price = (item cost + shipping) divided by (1 − fee percentage − margin percentage), so the price absorbs every percentage-based deduction before margin is even counted.

Sellers who price by simply adding a margin on top of cost routinely underprice themselves once marketplace and payment fees are subtracted, only discovering the shortfall when their real margin turns out thinner — or negative — after a sales report. Getting the back-calculation right the first time avoids relisting products at a loss.
