About this calculator

Total production cost breaks down into three buckets: materials (raw inputs consumed), labor (direct wages for making the product), and overhead (indirect costs like factory rent, utilities, and equipment depreciation that keep production running but aren't tied to one unit). Adding the three gives total cost, and dividing by units produced gives the cost per unit.

Manufacturers and cost accountants track this breakdown to set prices that cover true costs with margin to spare, to spot which cost category is driving up expenses when per-unit cost rises unexpectedly, and to compare in-house production cost against the price of outsourcing to a contract manufacturer.
