About this calculator

Instead of starting from the bill and adding a tip, this calculator works backward from the total amount actually paid to figure out what the original bill and the tip amount or percentage must have been. It is the same relationship as a standard tip calculation, just solved for a different unknown.

It comes in handy when someone only has the final charged amount, say from a card statement or a split payment app, and wants to check whether a tip was already included or how generous it actually was. It is also useful for figuring out exactly what one person's fair share was when a group paid a single lump total.
