About this calculator

Many US states apply sales tax on a vehicle purchase only to the price remaining after subtracting a trade-in’s value, rather than to the vehicle’s full sticker price — a policy usually called a trade-in tax credit or trade-in tax exemption. Where it applies, the tax owed is (vehicle price − trade-in value) × tax rate, and the amount of tax the trade-in effectively saves the buyer is the trade-in value multiplied by the same rate — money that would otherwise be taxed if the buyer sold the old vehicle privately and paid full tax on the new one.

Not every state offers this treatment — some tax the full purchase price regardless of a trade-in, and among the states that do allow it, some cap the deductible trade-in amount — so the benefit and even its existence varies by jurisdiction. Car buyers and dealership finance staff use this calculation during deal structuring to see the tax impact of trading in a vehicle versus selling it separately, and to compare the true out-the-door cost across scenarios; this calculator computes the tax owed after the trade-in deduction and the tax savings it produces.
